Lipitor (atorvastatin) is used to reduce the risk of stroke or heart attack in patients with high amounts of cholesterol in the blood. Take Lipitor even if you feel fine – as high cholesterol levels may display no symptoms sometimes, still increasing your risk of developing other health problems. You will need to take this medicine once a day with some food or without unless your health care provider prescribed otherwise. It's very important to follow all the directions of your doctor to make sure you benefit from the treatment as much as possible. You may need to take a lower dose first, but it will later be adjusted – but not more often than every 2-4 weeks. Make sure you tell your health care provider if you have any of the following medical conditions: muscle weakness, thyroid disease, kidney disease, muscle aches, or diabetes. They may be important for determining your dose. Also, inform your health care provider of using any medications besides Lipitor, especially cimetidine, other cholesterol-lowering medications, efavirenz, drugs suppressing the immune system, antifungal medications, clarithromycin, oral contraceptives, diltiazem, rifampin, or erythromycin.
